Hospital Shock Trauma Unit Busy with Head–on Collision Victims

HospitalCorr

Firefighters spent 15 minutes working to extricate a woman who was trapped in her vehicle following a collision in Carroll County.  She was then rushed to a nearby hospital with serious trauma.  The head-on crash is believed to have occurred as a result of heroin use by another individual, who struck cars in two separate incidents about a mile apart. In the second crash, the driver crossed the median into oncoming traffic, resulting in the drama that unfolded. If you or a loved one has suffered a head-on collision as a result of another driver’s negligence or recklessness, a local personal injury attorney can help you moving forward.

It All Adds Up

Collisions are generally the result of a number of issues combined.  Poor road conditions, mechanical failures, difficulty seeing due to weather or nightfall, slick roadways, and confusing signage may all contribute to serious accidents.  These, in addition to driver errors, can add up to a catastrophe.

Driver Mistakes

While this particular incident was related to intoxicating drugs, head-on collisions are all too often the result of a number of factors combined, with human error being a key feature. It seems that, although we all know that driving a 2,000 pound vehicle at high speeds is serious business, far too many drivers become complacent, and allow themselves to become cavalier about this responsibly.  The truth is, as many as 40,000 fatalities occur in America every single year on our roadways, and 4,000 of them are head-on collisions.  What can drivers do to avoid these tragedies?

  • Avoid Distractions: Everyone knows that texting and driving is incredibly dangerous, but there are many other distractions that can lead to accidents. Changing the radio station, reaching over to give your child a fallen pacifier, or petting your dog can all require attention that should be devoted to the road.
  • Stick to the Speed Limit: It goes without saying that excessive speed leads to accidents in many cases. Particularly on winding roads and heavily trafficked areas, it is important to adhere to posted limits.
  • Obey Traffic Signals: A large portion of serious accidents occur in intersections, when vehicles try to zip through a yellow light as it turns red, Stopping for that light would cost you only a few seconds, compared to the pain of a traffic calamity,
  • Refuse to get Aggressive: Losing your cool behind the wheel is never a good thing. If you find yourself getting angry or frustrated with inconsiderate or reckless drivers, take a deep breath and concentrate on a safe arrival.  There is no point in tailgating or engaging in other dangerous activities to spurn other drivers.
  • Pass with Care: Passing on two-lane roads can be treacherous. Never cross on a solid line, and be sure you have ample time to get back into your lane.
